Active Botanicals and Anti-Oxidants

Retinyl Palmitate  – Vitamin A (Retinol) combined with palmitic acid. Upon entering the skin, it is converted into Retinoic Acid. Retinoic Acid facilitates communication between cells and encourages aging cells to renew. In addition to increasing cell turnover, Retinoic Acid regenerates collagen as well as elastin, which helps prevent the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate – A stable form of Vitamin C that becomes active (Ascorbic Acid) once it passes into the skin. Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant that protects the skin from free radical damage. Vitamin C also stimulates the production of collagen and can have lightening effects that brightens the skin.

Tocopherol –Also known as Vitamin E, Tocopherol is a fat soluble anti-oxidant.  This means that it can help protect components of our skin that are off limits to other anti-oxidants.  Tocopherol has also been used to decrease scaring.

Aloe (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Extract – Botanical extract with hydrating, softening, healing, bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal properties. Aloe is hypoallergenic, antipyretic, antipruritic (relieves itching) and also anti-inflammatory.  Some of its constituents include: amino acids, enzymes, wound healing hormones, biogenic stimulators, and minerals.  Another property is its ability to moisture regulate.

Lavender Oil (Lavandula Angustifolia) – A flowering plant of the mint family lavender is native to the western Mediterranean.  Lavender is used in herbal medicine and its flowers are also used as a culinary herb.  In skin care applications lavender oil can help heal wounds, act as an anti-microbial, combat blemishes, and counter the damaging effects of UV radiation (photo-aging).

Bisabolol – The primary component of the essential oil extracted from Chamomile.  Bisabolol is high in panthenol concentrations which means it can effectively stimulate and promote the skin’s healing processes.  Bisabolol is also used as an anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and can help other ingredients penetrate into the skin.

Niacin – Also known as Vitamin B3, Niacin helps increase oxygenation on the areas it is used.  Niacin also acts as a topical anti-inflammatory, increases cell turnover to promote youthful skin, improves pigmentation, and helps alleviate dry skin.

Grape (Vitis Vinifera) Fruit Cell Extract – Protects cells from UV-induced stress, including epidermal stem cells which are essential to youthful skin.

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) Extract – This ingredient is used as an anti-inflammatory and as an antioxidant.  Historically it was used to help alleviate a wide array of skin ailments such as wounds, sun damage, and premature aging.

Argenine – An amino acid that is also an anti-oxidant.  Arginine is also thought to help with circulation, increase collagen production, and help in wound healing.

Proline – An amino acid that is a major component of collagen and helps in the production of collagen.

Alanine – An amino acid that helps in protein synthesis, acts as a skin conditioning agent, and can help make the skin look smoother.

Royal Jelly Extract – Produced by honey bees, Royal Jelly is full of vitamins and proteins.  When applied to the skin Royal jelly has a moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effect and can reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and improve skin texture.

Eastern St. Paul's Wort (Siegesbeckia Orientalis) – A plant found in Asia and used for a variety of skin illnesses.  This has been recently shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and can help regenerate damaged tissue by restoring the collagen matrix.

Alpenrose (Rhododendron Ferrugineum) Leaf Cell Culture Extract – A shrub that is native to the Alps, Pyrenees, Jura, and Northern Apennines.  The extract from the leaf cell culture is known to increase the vitality of skin stem cells, boost epidermal regeneration, improve the barrier function of the skin, and help the skin from environmental stresses.

Glycerine – Acts as a protective barrier when applied topically to the skin.  Glycerin moisturizes and makes the skin feel softer.

Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii)  – Produced from the nut of the African Shea trea.  Considered a natural moisturizing factor because its lipid content resembles that of our skin, which can help maintain the structure of the epidermis.  Shea butter acts as a moisturizer and skin barrier protector.

Beeswax – Produced by Honey bees, it is superior to mineral oil as a barrier to protect and moisturize the skin.

Squalane – A naturally occurring substance found on the skin and acts as a moisturizer.

Sweet Almond (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis) Oil – Acts as a protective barrier for the skin and helps provide a soft and smooth appearance.

Mushroom (Ganoderma Lucidum) Stem Extract – A mushroom used for over 2000 years for its medicinal properties in China, Japan, and other Asian countries.  Ganoderma Lucidum contains many bioactive compounds and acts as an anti-oxidant, immunoregulator, and moisturizer.

Guggul (Commiphora Mukul) – Made from the sap of the Commiphora Mukul tree native to India, where it has been used for its medicinal properties dating back to 600 BC.  Traditionally one of its uses was to treat skin disorders.  Recent research has shown that it can support the proliferation of skin cells, increase collagen synthesis, and decrease expression of destructive enzymes in our skin.
